Weighing in on Reweighs
“35 Do not use dishonest standards when measuring length, weight or quantity. 36 Use honest scales and honest weights, an honest ephah and an honest Hin…” Lev 19 35-36
Carriers are more likely to reweigh and reclassify freight now more than ever. A few years ago this was not the case. The LTL carriers have been for the last 3 years or so fighting a price battle with each other. In an effort to gain more business they cut prices in hopes of securing more market share. They also traditionally did not inspect or reweigh items as much as they do now.
The LTL carriers are now in a position where they have established 1 or sometimes 2 price increases last year (which for the most part has stuck). The major LTL carriers are seeking to recoup lost income over the years. To date some of the major LTL carriers are still losing money. In order to recoup this lost revenue they must either increase their volume or make more money off their existing shipments.
What this means to many clients is not necessarily the item you shipped has always weighed X amount of pounds and the carriers are out to get you. Nor is it the case that this item has always shipped as class “A” and now all the sudden it is class “B” (insert weights and classes as you see fit) The bottom line is the LTL carriers are inspecting and weighing freight that they weren’t a few years ago. If something is inspected or reclassed there will always be documentation that the carrier has to provide. Upon request we can submit that information to you. So you can make adjustments and plan accordingly. In order to protect yourself from loses you can do the following
1) Don’t guess when making weights.
2) If you are unsure of class give us a call 877-764-9441.
3) Account for the weight of the skid and packaging and not just what the product weighs.
4) Have your scales tested and calibrated annually.
When you align yourself with a company such as PNGLC you get leveraged pricing but expertise as well. Sometimes a reweigh can work out in your favor if your item is density based those few extra pounds can be the difference between class 250 and class 150. If that is the case we will take the time to audit that freight and get the proper rate applied. This service a free to our customers and one of the main reasons why we believe there is no substitute for human experience. Web-based systems cannot catch this and merely forward charges on to you.
