From Shipping to Partnershipping – No Need to Do It Alone
20 years ago, Dale Sheehan had discovered the benefit of a strategic partnership with a 3PL, but back then he was on the other side of the fence. While working in the transportation department of a large company, Dale faced what many of you face on a daily basis – huge amount of responsibility, tight deadlines, and strict regulations. Numerous companies have found that a great way to face these challenges is to create a strategic partnership with a 3PL, and since Dale has been on both sides of these relationships, let’s hear what he has to say…
“Approximately 20 years ago, I was in corporate transportation for a large personal care products company. My responsibilities included managing all domestic transportation operations. We had carrier partners in all regions of the country to haul specific lanes to and from our 3 distribution centers. Due to the location of one of our manufacturing facilities and pre-set production schedules that had to be met, I often ran into challenges.
It was in these difficult situations that I started to reach out to 3PLs to utilize their vast carrier bases. Over a period of time my relationships with third parties evolved into true partnerships as their services expanded into partial truckloads, inbound consolidations, JIT programs and eventually freight payment, auditing and reporting as well.
Looking over the past 20 years, I have seen a shift to more utilization of 3PLs. This is partly due to the fact that a lot of corporations have been cutting back on staff to save costs and in the process they are losing logistics expertise. With the complexity of the supply chain in this era corporations have had to reach out to 3PLs for the expertise to remain competitive in their respective industries.”
